Quiet lawn maintenance is good for your health

One of the advantages of electric lawn equipment is that it is significantly less noisy than gas.  It is not uncommon for our customers to comment on how quiet the equipment is, or just ask “Is that thing on?” While this is great for people who are trying to nap or listen to music or TV while we are mowing, there are also health benefits associated with the quiet environment that you and your neighbors can share.

The main problem people associate with loud noise that comes from commercial lawn equipment is hearing loss. This is a concern for the workers operating the equipment, and they usually must wear some form of hearing protection to avoid damaging their ears, unless they work for a company that uses electric equipment, such as Savannah Eco Mowing

While you yourself are unlikely do develop hearing loss from the noisy gas equipment your lawn service uses to mow your lawn, hearing loss is not the only negative health effect associated with noise. Studies show that there are direct links between noise and health.  Among the health problems noise can contribute to are stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, hypertension, cardiac disease and ulcers. It can also effect your life in other negative ways, such as speech interference, sleep disruption, and lost productivity.

So when choosing who you want to maintain your lawn, you can decide not to contribute to the din of lawn equipment in your neighborhood, and instead help create a quiet, healthy environment by choosing Savannah Eco Mowing.

Benefits Of Regular Mowing

Having your lawn mowed regularly has a variety of benefits that go beyond the obvious neat and appealing look of a freshly cut lawn. It also helps keep your lawn healthy in a few different ways.

Cutting your lawn down to a uniform length on a regular basis helps the lawn grow more uniformly and consistantly, because all areas of the lawn have equal access to sun and water.  Another benifit is that over time, the plants that recover most quickly from each mowing will thrive and grow the most, making the overall lawn more hardy and healthy.

It also helps combat many weeds, because cutting the seedhead off weeds is more traumatic than cutting the tips off the blades of grass. This is especially true if you mow often enough so that you are removing no more than 1/3 of the total legnth of the grass. This allowes the grass to recover more easily than the weeds.

Another advantage is that, if you use a mulching mower, the part of the grass that is cut gets mulched into small pieces which fall back into the soil and become a good natural fertilizer.

Mowing regularly also means that debris gets picked up, and leaves that fall on the lawn can be mulched up before accumulating to the point where it becomes a big cleanup job.

Green Lawn Mowers

There are many different types of mowers available today, and depending upon your lawn, some will be better suited to your needs than others.

For people with small lawns who like to mow often,  a reel mower might do the trick.  Reel mowers are the best for the environment, as they create no emissions.  They are also good for your lawn, as they don’t tare the grass as much as rotary mowers when cutting, making the lawn less susceptible to disease.  The drawbacks are that they can be hard to push if the grass is thick, and they will not cut grass or weeds that have grown too high.

Electric mowers are another eco friendly option.  They are available in corded or battery operated models.  Many have removable batteries that you can take inside and charge after you are done mowing.  The electricity will cost you a lot less than gas, and electric mowers reduce emissions as the pollution generated at the power plant creating the electricity for the battery or mower is significantly less than what a gas mower would emit.  Most electric models are  not quite as powerful as gas versions, but keeping the blades sharp will improve results.  Other advantages are that they require no tune ups,  run quieter, and start with the push of a button.

If you have a large lawn and need to get a riding or zero turn mower for your lawn, there are more and more eco friendly options becoming available.  There are electric, propane, and mowers that will run on biodiesel available.

Of course, if you are too busy to mow yourself, you can still go green and hire Savannah Eco Mowing and get a reliable, professional, eco friendly lawn care service.

Why aerating is good for your lawn

Savannah Eco Mowing strives to offer a variety of lawn care services that will help make your lawn healthier and lower maintenance, while being safe for the environment. Aeration fits right in with this ideal as it very seldomly needs to be done, and benefits your lawn with very little environmental impact.

Aeration involves removing small cores of soil throughout the lawn, allowing water, air, and nutrients to fill the holes and get into the soil and root system more easily, reduces compaction, and encourages root growth. Aeration also helps drainage, reducing runoff and puddling. Basically, Aeration is an aspect of organic lawn care and landscaping that will help your lawn become healthier and hardier.

It is only necessary to aerate your lawn every other year, and you can rent an aerator and do it yourself, or hire a professional lawn care service such as Savannah Eco Mowing to do it for you. Aeration should be done just before that growing season for the grass, which in Savannah, GA where warm season grasses are common, is in the Spring.

Lawn Mowing with Battery Power

In the past, maintaining your lawn meant noisy, smelly, polluting gas mowers. Fortunately, there are a variety of cordless battery powered mowers on the market today that will do a good job mowing your lawn. With these rechargeable mowers you’ll spend less money on lawn care over time. No need to buy gas, oil, or spark plugs and electric mowers don’t require yearly tune ups. The cost of recharging the batteries is negligible compared to the cost of gas. They also start more reliably and with a push of a button, as opposed to yanking a cord over and over just trying to start your mower so you can mow the lawn. They are also much quieter than gas mowers, which is one reason people like lawn care services that use electric equipment, such as Savannah Eco Mowing.

Although many people might not realize it, lawn care is a significant contributor to air pollution, especially in cities. According to the EPA, emissions from lawn mowers contribute almost one third of the total air pollution in metropolitan areas such as Savannah, and five to ten percent overall. While the batteries still require electricity, they create significantly less pollution overall. If you have a small lawn you could also consider a reel mower, which create no emissions at all. Whether you want to do it yourself, or hire a professional lawn care service, battery powered mowers are a quiet, eco friendly way to mow your lawn.
